C1040, George Pyne
George Pyne was born in 1852 in Stepney and died 1921 West Ham, London UK. He was a violinist and self-taught maker and worked for Edward Withers for 20 years. George was credited with about 500 violins and violas on classical Cremonese models, some using imported parts. He was known for his very finely finished and accurate work. He used spirit varnish at first and later adopted an oil recipe, but generally of a plain, pale golden-brown colour.
